Baby Talk: Diapering

My computer got fried the other day, so Im working from a loner and the ipad. Which means, no pictures. Sad day :(  I've got a few projects to show you and maybe even a tutorial! Gasp. I never seem to have the patientce for those things.

Anyways, while I am in computer limbo, lets talk more about baby stuff!

Todays subject?

Cloth diapers!

Most people love them, some don't even entertain the arcane notion, others have tried and gone back to disposables, and others are eager to try.

Myself? We did cloth diapers while potty training Emmaline. I hated them. I loathed those days of stinky morning bums, constant laundry, rinsing solids out in the toilet, and wet pails. Maybe it was the system I was using (econobum covers with prefolds), but we were going for the most uncomfortable option, to help Miss E move to the potty.  It was a dark period in diapering for us.

Previously, we used Huggies exclusively, then moved into Luvs and Target brand when E got bigger. My only problem with disposable diapers is having to go to the store! I like being self sufficient and part of me still likes the idea of having all the diapers I need at home, only a mere wash away. Does that even begin to justify all the things I hated about cloth? I don't know. I'm not worried about the environment, I do my part in other ways, and the cost in extra electricity and water for us was almost a break even each month. California is not a cheap utilities state. Cheap anything, really.

I find myself on the fence. The Hubs has already announced his refusal to change cloth diapers, which is a big point for me, the ultimate believer in "Its your turn" co diapering. But the cloth fad beckons. Cute colors! Ease of use! Never buy another diaper again! Can I resist the siren call? We shall see.

So, lovely readers, what is your take on the cloth diapering? Favorite brands? Systems? Care to knock some sense into me with a few disposable diapers?

Do tell!

  1. You could try g-diapers; they are a nice compromise. There is also a new biodegradable diaper that will be available soon (manufactured in the US, but only available overseas for now; wth?) I'll look it up :)
We use cloth, with disposables as backup.

  3. i've been called the pampers snob because nothing else will do. i know that you hate the smell so i'll forgive you for not loving them. but who knows, things could be different this time. if you decide that you want the disposable (which would be smart if you want dave involved, and i know you do), i'll make it worth the time to go and get them (any brand) if you know what i mean.

  4. I don't use cloth diapers. I'm too much of a realist. I KNOW I would HATE them. I love the giant box of diapers at the store. My favorites (probably because I'm cheap too!) are the Parent's Choice brand at Walmart or the Cuddle Ups at Winco. I actually didn't like the Target brand much and I think Luvs smell funny when they are soiled. Cheap works for us. Good luck with all these new decisions!

  5. LOVE cloth diapers! I am addicted to cloth diapers. I spend my spare time on cloth diaper forums and swap pages and looking for a great deal on Hyena Cart or Etsy. I used disposables on my twins and in the beginning with Sarah. I hated the blow outs I got in disposables. I haven't had a single blow out since switching Sarah to cloth at 4 months. The laundry isn't much extra. I use a dry pail (dirties just go in a garbage can with a liner and I rinse poopy ones in the toilet with a sprayer and then spray with BacOut to prevent smell) and wash every 3 days. I'd say you didn't like them because you used Econobum. Some people love them but there are so many better and cuter options out there. And the amazing seamstress you are, you could just make your own fitteds and stick a cover over them. Also since switching to cloth I couldn't imagine putting my baby back in a disposable diaper. They seem so uncomfortable. I know I would never want to wear paper underwear!

    2. I guess I don't really have a favorite. I have all different types and styles of diapers and I use them depending on my mood, what we are doing, how long she'll be wearing it, etc. My favorite diapers right now are fitteds with a cover because they are super absorbent and she has been peeing more lately and leaking out of her pocket diapers. I would suggest looking into a diaper trial where you pay a deductible and they send you different types of diapers to try for about a month and then you send back what you didn't like. If you don't like any you send them all back and you just end up paying like $20. I definitely don't suggest getting all of one type of diaper because you might not like it, it might not fit well, your baby could be allergic to the materials. Anyway, let me know if you have any questions. I love to talk diapers!
